ILU/ILU2

My second assignment in Painting 2 is to limit our palette to 9 colors while creating an open subject painting. I wanted to take a break from oils and integrate my pen and pencil sketches into my larger work.

The inspiration behind this piece is a desire to combine design with my painting sensibilities. My imagery is derived primarily from San Francisco's architecture and simplistic type bubbles, with only abbreviated letters to explain the message. ILU/ILU2 is meant to be seen as a missed connection of sorts (with derived inspiration from Sophie Blackall and craigslist). My proposed media for this project so far is ballpoint pen on drawing paper with minimal splashes of watercolor.

I'm debating whether I just want the halos of color around the houses or if I want to place them in a stormy ocean. I think the only way to figure this out will be to do more studies, which is what I should do anyway.
